A Columbus native, Sumner Kelly attended St. Anne Pacelli High School, where he participated in Soccer, and Cross Country. After graduation, he attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. Sumner then went on to complete his undergraduate course work in pre-pharmacy at Andrew College in Cuthbert, GA. Prior to becoming a pharmacist, he also spent seven years at Callaway Gardens as a water ski instructor during summer breaks from classes.
It was no surprise that Sumner decided to go into a medical related field of study. He is the great grandson of Columbus native and renowned Ear, Nose and Throat physician, the late Dr. Francis Blackmar. He also enjoys the privilege of being the grandson of Internal Medicine physician, the late Dr. G. Bertling Smith, also a native of Columbus, Georgia.
Sumner pursued specialized course work in pharmacy ownership and diabetes care while attending the Mercer University School of Pharmacy in Atlanta. Following his graduation in 2006, he began his career at Dinglewood Pharmacy in Columbus, Georgia. For the next five years, he continued his career as a Wal-Mart pharmacist.
Sumner is married to Carla Kelly, a native of Crossville, Tennessee, a fellow pharmacist. The two met while attending pharmacy school. They have one dog named Barley and a cat named Kittie. In their spare time, they enjoy water skiing, bike riding, and snowboarding.
